5 cool facts about the next-gen Audi R8
Every R8 enthusiast is probably grinning ear-to-ear with the announcement of the next-generation model. A super-car by any other name might not have gotten us so excited, but come on, with the connection to Lamborghini, you have to step back and take a deep breath before delving into all the features and updates on this master of the road.
1) New Platform, New Presence on the Road
The next generation R8 has been announced with a basis that draws from the Lamborghini's Huracan. This means a lighter body and a more responsive driving experience than the current generation has to offer. The update in design is also clearly borrowing from its corporate cousins, with a sleek, aerodynamic slope that looks about ready to slice through the air when you get it out on a stretch of road where you can stretch your legs.
2) Updated Modular Sport System
When they were drawing up concepts for the second generation, designers took the first generation's platform and switched the switch to new extremes by modifying it into a Modular Sport System (MSS). It means more space, more comfort and a trimming of 100 pounds that may not seem like a huge change but you'll definitely notice it during the acceleration process.
3) Framed for Success
Architecturally, the new R8 has an interior that mirrors the Huracan with lightweight aluminum frame and carbon-fiber composite materials that forms a body at 174 inches in length, 48.8 inches high, and 76.4 inches wide. This shape offers some practical space behind the front seats. Something that hasn't changed, however, is the all-wheel-drive capacity of fully variable front/rear torque distribution from 0 to 100 percent on each axle.
4) Powerful V10 Engine
Anyone who has had a chance to get into the current-generation R8 has to have realized that the V10 offered on it provides drivers with an almost unheard of potential for making your presence known on the road. What Audi has done with the second-generation can be compared to turning the dial up passed 10. There's plenty of reason for it, too.
The standard V10 gives you 540 horsepower to play with, while the V10 Plus chooses to be a real show-off with its 610 horsepower that can get you from 0 to 62 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds.
5) Mighty Enough for the Avengers
For movie-buffs out there, you may have caught the Audi R8 showing off in the latest Avengers: Age of Ultron film. Driven by the charismatic Tony Stark, Audi announced the intention of a partnership through the Director of Marketing for Audi of America by saying:
"After eight years of successful partnerships with Marvel, Audi aligns with the evolving narrative of the Tony Stark character to showcase the all-new, redesigned 2016 R8. Having been part of the character's storyline for the past three Iron Man films, it is a perfect fit for Audi to return in Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron with Tony Stark driving the iconic supercar in its next generation."
